4 Ways to Narrow Down Your Writing Topic

Oftentimes, I meet creatives that have many different writing ideas, but they do not know where to start. These creatives are multitalented, and they have a lot of knowledge on many different subjects. Not knowing how to narrow down a writing topic is the roadblock that hinders people from starting on their manuscript. As a creative, you may have this same dilemma.

Here are four tips to help you narrow down your writing topic!

  1. Be clear about your area of expertise. You are an expert on a topic when you have experience, education, and victory in a certain area. Ask yourself these questions: What is a topic that many ask me for advice on? What is an area that I struggled with, but I applied principles to help me overcome challenges?

  2. Create a brainstorm dump! Grab a piece of blank paper, and list out all the ideas that you have in your head about a writing topic. Analyze the list to see if you have a common theme or message that repeatedly comes up. Use the “trending topic” to help you narrow down your writing topic.

  3. Understand the season that you are in. You can be called to many things, but you have to ask God: What is the message that I should share with people in this season of my life? Because you are multitalented, you have many different directions you can go in. Be encouraged that you can talk about these other subjects that are in your heart later on in life. There is a time and season for everything.

  4. Be consistent about journaling with God. If you are searching for a book topic, pay attention to the topic/themes that you consistently write about in your daily journaling time.
