The Price of Acceleration
I have an interesting relationship with the word, acceleration. During my junior year in undergrad (UMD, GO TERPS!!), I found out that I was called to be a teacher. I immediately panicked and thought: HOW IN THE WORLD AM I GOING TO BECOME A TEACHER IN ONE YEAR? I went to school to become a politician (LOL). I thought I was going to have to go back to school in order to be eligible to become a teacher. Fortunately, one day, a program called Teach For America (TFA) showed up in my inbox.
The picture above is a graduation picture with the 2013 Teach For America Mississippi Corps (BEST CORPS IN MY OPINION)! We finished our two year teaching commitment. Two years earlier, we endured a 6-week SUPER INTENSE program in Mississippi to become teachers in the fall. TALK ABOUT ACCELERATION! This accelerated process to become a teacher has sustained my ability to be a teacher for the past eight years!
Three things I learned about acceleration:
1. It is going to cost you something. You must be willing to make sacrifices. It will cost you your time, money, popularity, and/or comfort. If you are unwilling to make an investment in sharpening your skills, then you are forfeiting the opportunity to be accelerated. You will not honor or respect the destination you are heading to unless it costs you something.
2. It is going to require that you do something unconventional ! For example, you may have to sit in a class for long hours, travel to a different city, state, or country to learn from certain teachers. You might have to wake up earlier than usual, or for some, stay up later. Doing the unconventional thing often means doing something that will make you uncomfortable.
3. It will test every SINGLE part of you. Your mind, spirit, will, emotions, relationships, etc will experience immense pressure. You are going to be stretched beyond your wildest imagination! When you are moving faster than normal, expect to be expanded in all parts of your body. Do not give up because you feel the pressure that comes with acceleration.
Being stagnant or accelerated are choices in life that we get to make. The right decisions, mindsets, and behaviors can propel us into our destiny. What are you willing to do to accelerate your process? Don’t stay stagnant, ACCELERATE!
