Getting Over FOW! (Fear of Writing)
There is this thing going around that is quite contagious. This thing is hindering rising leaders from all over the world from using their pen and typing on the computer. It is so crippling that it stops leaders who have powerful voices from sharing their stories. FOW aka Fear of Writing is a dangerous disease because it stops leaders from bringing liberation to others through the use of their words. There are certain antidotes for leaders to cure their struggles with FOW.
The Medicine
Are you a perfectionist? The first prescription to get over FOW is to stop trying to be perfect. Many writers are not taking the leap to start their writing endeavors because they think they need to know all the ins and outs of writing. These are the individuals who think they need to be grammar kings and queens before creating their writing projects. Sometimes all you need to do is start typing away. You may not fully know where you are going, but you know that eventually, you will land somewhere that will make sense. Stop trying to make everything make sense in the beginning. Start writing, and see where your words take you.
Do you know your value? Another antidote to eradicate FOW in your life is learning your authentic identity. When you understand the value that you bring to society, you use your voice to help empower other people. In addition, you acknowledge that your voice is unique. Others may speak on similar topics, but you have a unique perspective, experience, and voiceprint that will leave an everlasting impression on your audience. How you express yourself, your word choice, and the cadence in your voice are things that help activate your audience to take action. Embracing your authentic identity helps you to boldly write and share your story with others.
Have you invested in sharpening your skills? There are some people who used to write a lot, but then all of a sudden stopped writing. Maybe you got bored and needed someone or something to challenge you. To develop yourself as a writer, you have to get into a community where other people have a love of language. You can stay out of FOW by being around other word nerds like yourself. Being around individuals who value rhetoric and understand the beauty of words will help keep your fingers moving. Get into a healthy community of writers that challenge you to sharpen your writing gift.
When you have a writing gift, you cannot have FOW control your life. There are people that are depending on you to write them out of poverty, destruction, depression, and so much more. Your writing gift gives you access to shape people’s perspectives. You recognize that your voice has the power to change people’s lives; therefore, you do not keep silent because of FOW. Get over FOW so that your words can bring liberation to your family, community, country, and the world.
